Functional Research

Wasabi has long been used as a medicinal herb. At KINJIRUSHI, we are engaged in joint industry-academia research on the functional properties of wasabi, uncovering various health and beauty benefits. We aim to contribute to people's health by continuing to explore the still-hidden potential of wasabi.

The Functional Benefits of Wasabi: More Than Just Delicious

Wasabi contains a functional component called hexaraphane (6-MSITC). This is an extremely valuable ingredient found only in trace amounts in the rhizome and root. In addition to manufacturing processed wasabi products, KINJIRUSHI develops bulk ingredients extracted from wasabi's functional components and sells health and beauty products using these components.

Four Functional Ingredients Derived from Wasabi and Their Key Health & Beauty Benefits

Foods with Function Claims-Compliant Ingredient
Wasabi-sulfinyl®

This functional ingredient is extracted from the rhizome and root of wasabi and contains hexaraphane (6-MSITC) as its active component. Hexaraphane is rarely found in the leaves or stems and only in trace amounts in the rhizome and root. Through years of joint research with academic institutions, KINJIRUSHI has uncovered various health benefits, including suppression of reactive oxygen species.

Tube Wasabi Contains Almost No Functional Ingredients

The most efficient way to consume hexaraphane (6-MSITC) is by grating fresh wasabi rhizome. In room-temperature tube wasabi, ingredients such as horseradish, preservatives, and additives are included to extend shelf life. As a result, almost no hexaraphane is present.
